FAQ's

Q: What is Yoga Therapy?
Yoga Therapy is a learning process of bdy, mind, and spirit where the more work you put in, there more you grow. The International Association of Yoga Therapists defines Yoga Therapy as, "the professional application of the principles and practices of yoga to promote health and well-being within a therapeutic relationship that includes personalized assessment, goal setting, lifestyle management, and yoga practices for individuals or small groups."
Q: How is Yoga Therapy different than a Yoga class?
While Yoga classes are a great way to practice movement, better breathing, relaxation, and make friends, Yoga Therapy offers individuals ready to do work on themselves in mind, body, and spirit in a supportive, trusted therapeutic relationship where feedback is freely exchanged, "lifestyle homework" happens and is discussed, and you the client, direct where we go.
Q: How is Yoga Therapy different than "talk" therapy?
Talk therapy is great for learning about yourself and how your mind works. Yoga Therapy does this too but in a different way. We don't fixate on emotions and and past experiences but rather seek to master belief systems using the movement, breathwork, mindfulness, and self-assessments to better understand and challenge belief systems, where appropriate.
Q: What can I expect in my first session?
Before we meet I will share some intake paperwork via email for you to complete and send back to me. Having reviewed these forms, I will ask you about your goals in Yoga Therapy and begin offering practices to help you get moving in that direction. Expect a mix of movement, breathwork, mindfulness practice, and intention setting.
Q: What can I expect after 5 sessions?
You will be learning about yourself and noticing lifestyle shifts, further along towards your goal than on day 1 and more self-aware. You will see more clearly areas of blockage in your life and you will be engaging lifestyle habit changes outside of our sessions that are in alignment with your goals.
Q: Can we meet virtually?
We can, and I have met with clients on zoom. However I do advise anyone who is able to to meet in person, to do so. The experience is much richer and I feel more connected to you as a person.
Q: What do I need?
Bring a water bottle. I have all the mats and equipment that we'll need in my office at River of Life, where we'll meet.
Q: What should I wear?
Clothing you feel comfortable moving freely in.
Q: What availability do you have?
I generally keep hours between 9 am and 4 pm. If you cannot meet during these hours, reach out to talk to me about other options.
Q: Do I need prior experience in Yoga?
Not at all. I enjoy working with folks new to Yoga.
Q: Can I work with you and a provider of another modality simultaneously?
Absolutely. Whether you're working with a PT, psychotherapist, chiropractor, massage therapist, accupuncturist, Feldenkreis practitioner, Reiki healing, sound therapy, it's all good and Yoga Therapy complements other modalities well. Yoga Therapy is a learning process. The more work you put in, there more you grow.
Q: Can I do Yoga Therapy while recovering from or rehabing an injury?
You can. We tailor all practices to maintain a pain-free, injury free experience.
If you can share protocols from your PT (or other provider) that you're working with, it helps me to better understand how I can be of best service. I am happy to communicate with your provider.
